Jordan Cousins admitted he was disappointed after Charlton were consigned to a first loss of the season at Wolves on Saturday.

The 2-1 reverse against Kenny Jackett’s side at Molineux saw the Addicks suffer an unfamiliar defeat in the West Midlands.

And last season’s player of the year was keen to highlight the fact it was an experience they hadn’t encountered so far.

Cousins said: “It’s a different feeling for us because we haven’t been beaten yet this year until now.

“It’s disappointing, but overall we’ve started well and it’s just a shame we couldn’t get anything from the contest today.”

Charlton led through Johann Gudmundsson’s second half opener, but were ultimately undone by goals from Wolves duo Dave Edwards and Adam Le Fondre.

Cousins said: “The first goal saw us play some nice stuff, and that’s what we try and do in each game.

“It’s just unfortunate we couldn’t hold on to that lead and see out the game from that point.

“But now we have a chance to rest and come back stronger after the international break.”

He added: “The game was getting stretched and in going for a second goal perhaps we left ourselves a little exposed, but we’ll work on that.

“Maybe we’ll have to look at how many go forward and how many stay back and cover in certain situations, but that happens sometimes and when you get stretched, teams can punish you. That’s what happened today.

“You could argue that their goals came against the run of play slightly, but that’s the way the game is at this level - you always have to be switched on.”

Cousins was deployed in central midfield to start with on Saturday before switching to right midfield in the second half.

And having played at right-back in last weekend’s victory over Hull City, the academy graduate insisted he didn’t mind being dubbed Mr Versatile.

He explained: “I’ve always said I’m happy to play wherever the team and the manager needs me to.

“I’m just happy to be on the pitch and as long I’m out there, I’ll always give one hundred percent.

“My main position is in central midfield but if I’m needed in defence I’ll fill in there.

“I think goal scoring is somewhere I can improve my game. I’m getting in good positions. I just need to work on finishing.”

Although Guy Luzon’s men were left disappointed on Saturday, eight points from a tough set of opening fixtures still represents a healthy return, something the midfielder was keen to emphasise.

Cousins said: “I think we would’ve taken eight points at the start of the season.

“Maybe you could even argue we deserve more, but with the teams we’ve faced it is a good return.

“People were tipping us for relegation but we knew that we had the ability to do well.

“Confidence is still high and we have lots of experience in the dressing room, so losing today shouldn’t get people too down.”

The game in the Midlands also saw Cousins reach the 100 appearance mark for the club, a remarkable statistic given the Englishman is still only 21.

He added: “I wasn’t sure how close I was to the milestone, but when I checked in the week I realised it was going to be today if I played.

“To reach that tally at 21 shows how lucky I am at such an early age.”
