Fred Onyedinma admits he had mixed emotions after an impressive personal display in Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat at home to Barnsley.

The 18-year-old scored his first ever Millwall goals, scrambling them in front midway through the first half and then seemingly rescuing a point eight minutes from time with a header to make it 2-2.

However, a last-gasp Lewin Nyatanga stoppage time winner consigned the Lions to a third loss in front of their own supporters in the space of a week, taking the gloss off Onyedinma’s individual contribution.

He said: “I’m delighted with the two goals I scored.

“They are my first goals for Millwall but we lost again at home, so I’m disappointed with that.

“It was disappointing we lost 4-0 last Saturday but I don’t know what it is - it is disappointing to lose but it could have been different in this game against Barnsley.

“Hopefully in the next game on Saturday we win and just go on from there and get confidence.”

Onyedinma added: “We conceded from three set pieces, which is not good defensively.

“I think we need to work on that.

“We are going to do that, stick together as a team and just go on from there.”

Neil Harris was furious with the way his side had thrown away a point and Onyedinma pointed out the manager’s reaction in the dressing room afterwards was perfectly understandable.

“You can imagine,” the youngster replied when asked what had been said.

“This was a third defeat at home as well, it is not really good for the fans.

“As I said, we conceded from three set pieces, which just isn’t good enough.

“Right now I think we need leaders, people to come out and step up, and we need to stick together as a team.”

Despite his young age, Onyedinma was pressed on whether his eye-catching display had already thrust him into the leadership category.

“I’m a leader in a different way, not as in vocally but by influencing the game by the way I play with energy,” the winger said.

“I think I could be a leader in that kind of sense.”

Onyedinma also downplayed suggestions Millwall’s youth and inexperience had been a key factor in Tuesday’s sloppiness at the back.

“I don’t think so,” the highly-rated academy graduate said.

“I think on another day we would have defended them well.

“If you see the goals that happens in football but we just need to move on from that, look forward to Saturday and hopefully get a win.”

Onyedinma also confessed the nature of Tuesday’s setback had hurt more than the hammering dished out by the Sky Blues.

“Yeah, because we wanted to win this game because of the 4-0 defeat at home to Coventry,” he added.

“We wanted to start off with a win in this game and build up from there but it is disappointing coming back from 2-2 to lose 3-2 right at the end.”
