Millwall manager Neil Harris said he was pleased with the test provided for his side during a 2-2 draw in their pre-season opener with Bromley.

The Lions found themselves a goal down to the National League outfit after Moses Ademola was sent clean through on goal and fired past Jordan Archer in the Millwall goal early on.

However, a penalty from John Marquis and a tap in for Ben Thompson seemed to have sealed victory for the League One side, before a bizarre own goal by Tony Craig levelled things up in the last minute.

‘Chopper’ was glad that his team was given a good run-out by their non-league hosts.

“First and foremost we got the minutes,” said the Millwall chief.

“Minutes in an extremely competitive fixture. They were the two things we were after.

“I was delighted with some individual performances, some individual play and team play in small spells.

“Exactly what I believed would happen was that we wouldn’t be as fluid as we’d want to be.

“Everybody knows that’s going to be the case for the next couple of weeks until we get settled for August 8.”

Harris, preparing to face his first full season in charge at The Den, is looking to install a “winning mentality” throughout the club, following relegation from the Championship at the end of last season.

“The boys are a little bit disappointed in there, because the boys want to win the game,” he revealed.

“We want a winning mentality. Which isn’t a problem. I was delighted to see so many young players on the pitch, but with that can come bad decisions.

“I’ve been there myself, you want to impress and show everybody what you’re about. I was delighted with some of the senior players, the way they dictated the game at times.

“The most important thing is we look like we’ve come through tonight without injuries.”

Despite trailing at the break, Millwall responded well early in the second half to turn the game around and lead 2-1.

There were spells of good attacking play, with Fred Onyedinma in particular impressing and playing a pivotal part in the second goal.

“Delighted with the two goals we scored. We could have scored more. But having said all that, I would have loved to have won the game,” Harris explained.

“I thought we could have probably defended better for the first goal. The second goal – Tony won’t score a better goal than that during his career!” added the Millwall boss, referring to an freak own goal from the returning Tony Craig.

A sliced clearance from the edge of the box flew over his own shoulder and looped into the top corner of the Lions’ net to hand Bromley parity in the final minute.

The League One side fielded two virtually different XIs in either half, and Harris revealed he will look to utilise this tactic for much of pre-season.

“The idea was to give the guys 45 minutes each,” he admitted.

“We rotated the center halves to play with different people –we’ve got two lefties and two rights so they’ve played with each other now and will continue to do that during pre-season until I pick my final pairing.

“The subs we made at the time were the subs we had decided to make prior to the game.

“There were a couple of players missing from the team sheet that we decided not to risk.”

“They had worked extremely hard during training and tonight wasn’t the night to push anybody or cause any injuries.”

Milwall return to friendly action this Saturday as they face League Two AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow (3pm).
