An angry fan has been mocked online after pledging to stop following Charlton Athletic after the club established its first LGBT supporters group.

The Proud Valiants have been formed as a response to the incident earlier this year where a bogus LGBT Charlton fans group called Charlton Rainbows made up fake stories of homophobic assaults.

After this incident, Charlton's LGBT community felt it was time to set-up their own group to ensure fans would feel safe supporting the club.

The group is also open to other supporters who feel homophobia in any sport should be eliminated A Proud Valiants spokesman said: "Everybody has a right to enjoy the 'beautiful game' regardless of gender identity, ethnicity or sexuality in an environment where they feel safe and unthreatened.

"There has been an amazing amount of work done over the years working to achieve equality for all in football and we hope to continue in this vein by making sure people are aware all forms of discrimination including homophobia have no place in the modern game."

Charlton Athletic have pledged their full support to the group.

A Charlton spokesman said: "We want to ensure our visitors feel equal with a sense of belonging, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, disability or religion - everybody is welcome at Charlton Athletic Football Club."

But after hearing this news, Twitter user @greekboy334433, who describes himself as a lover and a fighter, described the group as 'shameful' and asked for a refund on his season ticket.

He tweeted: "It's a different opinion to the bible and common decency, why should we be forced to accept something so disgusting.

"I am just a normal guy, who hates the left wing telling us these homo/cross dressers are normal, they are not."

In response to greekboy, Charlton's official account tweeted him the Oxford definition of the word bigot.

Proud Valiants was officially launched on May 17.
