Welling moved quickly last night to end online speculation about a potential Jamie Day return to Park View Road by confirming Loui Fazakerley as permanent manager.

Day was sacked yesterday afternoon by Ebbsfleet having quit the Wings before Christmas to replace Steve Brown at Stonebridge Road, a move which ultimately didn’t work out as Fleet failed to even make the play-offs.

Fazakerley had been in temporary control of Welling for almost two months when Day’s initial successor Jody Brown was dismissed after just 73 days.

Having looked doomed at one stage, a home victory over Southport on Saturday (5.15pm ko) will guarantee the Wings another season in non-league’s top flight – an improvement which has landed Fazakerley the role.

He told wellingunited.com: “I would like to thank the board for putting their faith in us and giving us the opportunity to manage the club on a full-time basis next season.

“I say us because I wouldn’t be able to do this job without both head coach Matt McEntegart and first team coach Paul Barnes.

“They are the brains behind all the work we do on the training field, so I prefer us to be known as the management team.

“All three of our skill sets complement each other and we all bring something different to the table.

“I truly believe the three of us can create something special here at Welling, starting with securing our safety this Saturday.

“I really hope the fans get right behind the team this weekend and help to push us over the finish line against Southport.

“Then we can look forward to another season in the Conference Premier next season.”

Wings general manager Barry Hobbins is in no doubt Fazakerley is the right man for the job.

He said: “The board have been impressed by Loui and his team since they have taken charge of the club.

“They have displayed plenty of passion and qualities that we look for in our club, and we wish him every success in the role.

“I’ve enjoyed working with Loui and know that his appointment will be popular with our loyal fans.”
