Yoni Buyens lamented two first half gifts which gave Blackburn Rovers a platform for victory on Saturday.

News Shopper:

Rovers ran out 3-1 winners at The Valley but the Charlton midfielder believes there was a smaller gap between the teams than the scoreline suggested.

Two defensive errors in the first half from Chris Solly and Roger Johnson were punished by clinical finishes from Jordan Rhodes and Craig Conway.

Buyens converted a penalty early in the second halve, his sixth of the campaign, to halve the deficit.

The home side had several chances to draw level, most notably with Igor Vetokele hitting the bar and Tony Watt shooting wide when through on goal, but were made to rue a string of missed opportunities as Rhodes sealed the three points 12 minutes from time.

And Buyens accepted two individual lapses in concentration cost his team any chance of getting something from the game.

He explained: “I think both goals were gifts from our side.

News Shopper:

“It was too easy both times and then it is hard to get two goals back so early in the game because we were not playing the best we could.

“The other side was not creating any chances either and we just gave them two goals.

“It was hard for us after that to get into the game.

“I think we started really well in the second half with a goal and hitting the bar and another good opportunity.

“Those chances did not go in, then the goal came at the other end and sometimes that happens.”

Despite the result, Charlton’s on-loan midfielder is optimistic the defeat was just minor blip and not the end of Charlton’s impressive run of form under Guy Luzon.

He explained: “I hope it is just a small setback.

“I think there were just three or four times in the game when we were not concentrated enough, not 100 percent, and they scored three times out of it and punished us really well.

“That killed us because I do not think there was a big difference between this game and the games we played before.

Jordan Rhodes makes it 3-1

“It was just the three goals we gave away and we did not do that in the other games.

“We also created chances ourselves to score as well, so I do not think we need to worry too much about the loss.”
