New signing Chris Eagles was delighted to end a busy week with a goal scoring debut from the bench for Charlton at Wigan on Friday evening.

The midfielder replaced Tony Watt on 71 minutes to add a third late on after first half strikes from Frederic Bulot and Igor Vetokele had put the Addicks in a commanding position at The DW Stadium.

And Eagles was happy to grab a goal and help his new team-mates get the three points.

“I was over the moon,” said the ex-Manchester United trainee.

“It was a great start, a bit scrappy first 10 minutes but after we got that great start I think we went from strength to strength.

“It’s always tough here, the crowd were getting a bit edgy.

“But it was brilliant.

“I was pleased the team were winning when I came on, obviously the goal is a bonus.

“It’s down to Johann Gudmundsson that I scored, because if I was in that position I probably would have shot. I thank him for that.”

The former Blackpool player, who scored at The Valley for the Tangerines in a 2-2 draw earlier this season, hadn’t played a game since the turn of the year and was relieved to be back in action again.

“People who know me know that I love playing football,” he said.

“It has been difficult but it was my choice.

“As soon as I heard Charlton were interested I rang them up and said I’d come down for free. I was dying to come down.

“The lads have welcomed me.

“It has been a bit of a dream week but very tiring.

“I came down on Monday and trained, came down from Manchester. Tuesday I had a fitness test, it was all go.

“It’s all been worth it, and now there’s a game against Derby on Tuesday for which I can’t wait.”

The 29-year-old has been impressed with the quality of the squad that he has joined up with.

He explained: “The lads had told me that they had drawn and lost a couple before last weekend but with the talent they’ve got in the dressing room, I said to them in the week we should be full of confidence.

“The back end of the season is what everyone should be looking forward to.”

Eagles has signed a short-term deal until the end of the season and the experienced midfielder is eager to prove he is worth a longer contract.

“I’d love to,” he admitted when asked if he’d like a longer stay in SE7.

“That’s between the club and myself but I know if I do well then there’s a deal there to be done. I’d love to do it.”

Eagles also revealed he cannot wait to perform in front of Charlton’s home fans at The Valley after being impressed by the travelling contingent at the DW Stadium.

“Brilliant,” was how he described the 554 away contingent.

“It’s a long old way but they were signing from the start, even when it was 0-0.

“You can see straight away there is a great buzz around the place.

“I can’t wait to play at home because I haven’t been there yet. I can’t wait for that and that’s next weekend.”

Charlton v Huddersfield this Saturday is £5 entry for all areas of the ground.
