Tony Watt was a relieved man as Charlton finally ended their three-month winless run with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Brentford.

Goals from Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Igor Vetokele and Frederic Bulot gave the Addicks a well-deserved victory as they brushed the Bees aside.

And Watt, signed in January from Standard Liege, cherished the three points picked up on St Valentine’s Day.

He explained: “Nothing beats a 3-0 win.

“When you lose so many games, it’s incredible.

“It gets to you, you are thinking about it all the time.

“Now on Valentine’s Day we’ve got a win so I can go and enjoy it.”

Watt added: “I think we controlled the game today.

“Tuesday we looked a bit nervous first half, we weren’t at our game and we came out today.

“Because we lost a goal so late (v Norwich) it gave us a lift today to make sure we won and make sure we didn’t make any mistakes.”

Saturday’s victory coincided with the return to the team of keeper Stephen Henderson, as well as an impressive debut from recent addition Roger Johnson in defence.

Watt said: “I think everybody as a team just clicked.

“Roger came in and done well, he stiffened up the back four.

“Hendo came in after injury and he proved his worth.”

Watt wasn’t on the scoresheet himself but laid Charlton’s second goal on a plate for Vetokele.

And the Scotsman admitted this provided him with just as much pleasure.

“He’s made two good saves from me actually,” Watt said of Brentford keeper David Button.

“I got an assist and that’s just as good for me.

“It’s other people’s goals and that’s fine as long as I’m playing my part in it. It’s a team game, as they say.”

Saturday gave Charlton fans a first chance to see the budding Watt and Vetokele strike partnership from the start of a game, and the 21-year-old revealed his admiration for his new team mate’s attributes.

“It’s easy to play with a player like that, he’s unbelievable,” Watt said.

“You don’t get bought for X amount of money if you’re not good.

“Even in training you see his qualities - his finishing, he’s good with the ball, he’s good in the air for a little guy.”

Watt has already worked with Charlton head coach Guy Luzon previously in Belgium and stressed he enjoys working under the Israeli.

“He backed me at Standard,” the forward said.

“I don’t think the club (Standard Liege) wanted to sign me, they had reports I had a bad attitude.

“He said just be honest with me and if you tell me right now you’re not going to cause me problems I’ll sign you on the spot.

“I was honest with him, I told him everything. He signed me, backed me, always pulled me into his office and worked hard with me.

“He’d tell me what I needed to improve, what I was good at. He’s given me confidence.”

Watt has been well backed by the Charlton fans since arriving at the club and notched his first goal in SE7 against Norwich in midweek.

The former Celtic man was keen to praise the supporters who backed their side vocally on Saturday.

“You’ve got to give a bit back, they’ve been brilliant to me,” he said.

“They’ve been chanting my name even when I’ve not been playing.

“As a footballer that makes you feel welcomed and if you feel welcome at a club, it makes you perform better, 100 per cent.

“They’re helping me and they’re giving me a lift.

“When you’re playing they make easier, you’re happier, you do things and even when they don’t come off they applaud you.

“It gives you a boost.”

Charlton face Wigan on Friday night in a huge game down at the bottom of the Championship.

Watt added: “We won’t go in over-confident and think we’ll just beat them because Wigan have got a good team, some good players.

“We just need to go in as we have done today and work as a team.”
