A college has provoked uproar from Lions fans after inviting sociology students to watch Millwall's match against Brighton so they can study "working class culture".

The Varndean College event's poster invites AS-level pupils to "observe and even talk to football fans from Brighton and the notorious Millwall FC."

And it tells those interested in attending they will have the chance to see "working class culture" along with "issues around sexuality, race and ethnicity".

The poster - which includes a newspaper clipping about a Millwall hooligan - says students will also have the chance to eat a pie and enjoy "a nice warm beefy Bovril".

Millwall's fan on the board Peter Garston said the poster was "a disgrace".

He said: "I think it's quite an affront to Millwall fans."

Mr Garston went on: "I think it's a disgrace. You can go to any ground in the country and see the stuff they mention. But they're probably too lazy to look at anywhere else."

And the invitation to tomorrow night's match has provoked a storm of controvery online.

News editor for Talk Sport Robyn Schonhofer tweeted: "Words "offensive" and  "stereotyping" spring to mind."

Jon Hatchman wrote: "Varndean College using stereotypes against "working class" Millwall fans as a sociology experiment. Really not cool."

And @jen725 tweeted: "Millwall players off to Lewisham hospital today, somewhere they helped save. What have your students done Vardean College?"
