Crystal Palace skipper Mile Jedinak declared Sunday afternoon’s 3-1 win over Liverpool at Selhurst Park as “massive”.

The three points ended a run of five Premier League games without a win as Palace came from behind to pile more pressure on Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

The Eagles fell behind inside two minutes to Ricky Lambert’s opener – his first in a Liverpool shirt – before striking back through Dwight Gayle, who was making his first start in the Premier League since the Burnley draw.

Palace turned in an exemplary performance after the break, and when Yannick Bolasie centred for Joe Ledley to put them ahead, it was well deserved.

Jedinak put the result beyond doubt with a sensational free-kick with 10 minutes left.

He said: “This win was massive, we needed that big time, we knew it was going to be difficult and we did not help ourselves by conceding so early on but the reaction from the boys was first class.

“The boys up front all caused them mayhem and we kept it tight at the back after the goal – we’re ecstatic.”

He added: “We’ve been thrown some difficult obstacles this season, and to go behind so early we could have shot ourselves in the foot and let our heads drop – but the way we fought back, the willingness, it was first class. We really dug in.”

Gayle won the free-kick from which Jedinak hit his fourth goal of the season, and it was a surprise to the striker when his skipper stepped up.

Jedinak said: “I was not sure if I was going to take the free-kick, Gayle put the ball down and I told him I’d take it and he looked at me in bemusement.

“I just felt something and luckily it’s gone in, but I am just happy that we’ve won. We can breathe a sigh of relief.”
