Bromley manager Mark Goldberg was ecstatic after his side progressed to the first round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory at Evesham United on Saturday.

Danny Waldren had given the Conference South side an early lead but it was all square before the break, as Ashley Edenborough headed home from a corner.

However, Waldren restored Bromley’s lead by heading home from a Louis Dennis corner five minutes into the second period with what proved to be the winning goal.

Goldberg could not contain his delight after the final whistle and claimed this achievement felt even better than the previous four times he’d guided Bromley into the first round proper of the competition.

He said: “Today feels like the best of them all for me.

“It’s a bit of a milestone for the club, a milestone for me, to get there five times within nine years.

“This was probably on paper the easiest route through, basically not only because of the teams we were drawn against but also because of the quality of the squad we have.

“In a way, each game has been as difficult as every game we’ve ever had in the FA Cup.”

Goldberg added: “I would have taken a draw today, I really would have been happy to grind out a draw.

“I can only just say how proud I am of them.

“We’ve managed to come away from home in difficult conditions and what could have been a banana skin and make sure that we got through to the next round, so I’m delighted.”

Goldberg was keen to heap praise on goal scorer Waldren, whose two strikes came at important times for Bromley.

The boss said: “We got the goals that mattered.

“Danny Waldren, what a masterful captain and leader he has always been for us. He’s been amazing.

“We’ve stepped up the quality of our squad and he steps up with it.

“They were two fantastic goals by Danny Waldren.”

Bromley didn’t have it all their way, but it was a determined defensive display which saw them over the line.

“There were some defining moments,” Goldberg explained.

“Seb Brown pulled off a fantastic save and then Ugo Odoji, who was at fault for their goal, allowed the number nine to get a header on it, but he made up for it with a fantastic block in the second half.

“That was where you needed your players to put their bodies on the line.

“For me, Ugo has redeemed himself for the mistake from the corner.

“They kept having a go at us right to the end. When there’s one goal in it, you always think it’s not over yet until the final whistle the blown.

“When you’ve got nothing to lose in a cup game, you’ll throw that extra big man up front.

“You’re going to go for it, so in a way we did really well.”

Bromley have faced Gillingham, Colchester, Leyton Orient and Fleetwood Town at the first round stage in recent years, and Goldberg was asked if he’d like another Football League side this time around.

“Possibly,” he replied.

“Maybe we’d even fancy it if we could get a lesser team and get through to the second round.

“’I’ve got such a good squad now, I don’t want to waste the opportunity of having such a good team to show what they can do.

“The cup competition is a wonderful competition for non-league clubs.”
