Midfielder Yoni Buyens was left disappointed as Charlton’s unbeaten start to the Championship season came to an end at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Callum Wilson’s third minute strike secured all three points for Eddie Howe’s side and inflicted the first loss in a dozen league games this term for the Addicks.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s first half free-kick and an injury time Lawrie Wilson header were the only occasions Artur Boruc had any real work to do in-between the sticks for the Cherries, as the visitors struggled to gain any real momentum.

And Buyens thought the south-east London side’s performance didn’t warrant anymore than a defeat.

He said: “The disappointment is big but we have to be honest, I think we didn’t deserve more than this.

“The early goal killed us and we didn’t have a response after.

“I think they deserved to win.”

Buyens, on loan for the season from Standard Liege, singled out match winner Callum Wilson as the man Charlton failed to deal with.

The Belgian explained: “It’s always difficult when you concede a goal after a few minutes, and then the other team can play their favourite game with a fast player up front (Callum Wilson).

“He was always going in the channel, trying to use the space we left in defence. “We couldn’t create any occasions, any chances, so it was a really difficult game for us.”

Academy graduate Karlan Ahearne-Grant, 17, made his full debut for the Addicks and was one bright point in a dull display, causing the home team’s defence a few problems in the first half.

Buyens was quick to heap praise on the young man.

“He always gives 200 percent,” the midfield ace said.

“Grant is really fast as well but because they were in front they didn’t leave as much space at the back so we couldn’t play that game.

“The first goal really did hurt us.”

Charlton’s top scorer Igor Vetokele was forced off with an injury at half-time and Buyens admitted the team missed him.

“He wasn’t 100 percent even before the game,” the 26-year-old added.

“It’s hard when he’s not there for us, we lose quite a lot of quality up front.

“We are a team who needs to play collectively.

“Today we failed I think as a collective team, not because one or two players were a little bit injured.”

Buyens has scored three times already for the Addicks, all from the penalty spot, and is loving his time in SE7 so far.

“I’ve enjoyed it, “ he said.

“The two previous games I was a bit tired because I’ve played almost every game except in the cup.

“But for the rest I’ve really enjoyed it here.

“It’s a nice competition, always nice games.

“The level is the same every week and that is a good thing.

“I hope I can progress here and we can do the same as a team.”
