Indiscipline cost Welling dearly as both goalkeeper Jamie Turner and player manager Jamie Day saw red.

Turner's dismissal changed the course of the game while Day was sent off after the late goal that deflated his team.

Day had the first chance of the game when he tried to place an effort after Welling had stretched the Southport defence. Then Aristide Bassele curled an effort well over as the visitors came out trying .to play their way through.

Amadou Bakayoyo had a shot blocked for Southport but Welling continued to look sharp and create openings.

Malachi Hudson had a shot deflected wide, then a brave block kept a Jamal Fyfield effort out.

Joe Healy's great through ball sent Hudson bearing on goal again but his stabbed effort went narrowly wide.

David Raya Martin was called into action, making a comfortable save from Tyrone Marsh following good work by Bassele.

More good Welling football gave Hudson the opportunity to feed Healy but his low ball across the face of goal failed to get the touch needed to give Welling the lead they deserved.

Luke Foster headed wide from a deep Southport free kick before Welling were reduced to ten men and all changed.

In the 40th minute Ben Jefford cleared a shot off the line then, following a half clearance, a cross back in was claimed by Turner before taking a heavy and late hit by Richard Brodie. Brodie then appeared to kick and Turner reacted by treading on Brodie's arm earning him a red card. Brodie was cautioned for his part as was Day for stating his unhappiness too forcibly.

Jon Henly was brought on as the replacement goalkeeper with Hudson sacrificed.

At the start of the second half Brodie had a free kick deflected for a corner, He then headed wide from the resulting corner at the start of the second half however Welling still looked to try to play football despite their numerical disadvantage.

Paul Rutherford was booked for a cynical foul on Jefford but was soon leading a break that caused Welling problems. The original chance was blocked for a corner but the Wings had trouble in dealing with it and Dominic Collins chipped in a cross that Joe Connor headed wide.

Fyfield went on a long run but Raya Martin claimed the cross and instigated a quick counter attack that was halted by a Barney Williams foul that earned him a caution. Bassele then had a shot half blocked to give Raya Martin an easy save.

Brodie took a tumble when not touched that could have seen him in trouble but then showed the other side of his game when heading Fitzpatrick's cross and drawing a brilliant save out of Henly.

Substitute Mitchell Austin then found space but Williams made a brave block.

There was a let off for Welling when Southport put a fine move together to give John Marsden a clear chance but his measured side footer went wide of the far post.

As Southport broke again, Fyfield made a wild challenge that earned him a caution.

Marsden came close to breaking the deadlock in the 84th minute but Henly touched the ball onto the post and wide, although a goal kick was awarded.

Having looked like they would weather the storm, welling conceded deep into injury time when Connor volleyed home Brodie's cross.

Day then earned himself a second yellow for foul on Brodie as Welling started looking at their long journey home empty handed.
