Ebbsfleet United manager Steve Brown revealed he was pleased with the three points but also felt his side could have played better than they did after winning 3-0 at Farnborough.

Goals from Billy Bricknell, Daryl McMahon and Dean Rance gave the Fleet victory, but they did not have to hit top gear in order to beat a poor Farnborough side.

Opposite number Spencer Day had used his programme notes to suggest Farnborough were second favourites and rank outsiders to win the game, but Brown was just glad his side had not slipped up.

The Fleet boss said: “I thought it was a job well done.

“We were expected to win and I read Spencer Day’s comments in the programme about how they were making up the numbers today in order to try and take the pressure off his team.

“We’re fully aware we have an expectation level this season, but you’ve still got to find a way to beat the XI in front of you and I felt the players did that rather well today.

“We weren’t at our best, and certainly when you look at the Sutton and Hythe performances it wasn’t to that level, but we got the job done.

“It’s emphatic and three points, so I can’t ask for more than that from the players, who worked hard and were diligent in the performance.

“The whole aim today was to get the three points and squeeze ourselves closer to the top of the table.”

However, although satisfied with the three points, the manager did feel there were parts of his side’s display which could have been improved on.

Brown explained: “In terms of what we got out of the game, we had a bit of a mismatch in the fact our passing wasn’t great and our movement was a bit sterile.

“But we were very disciplined and strong in terms of how we approached set pieces and defending our goal.

“Sometimes that’s what you need - if you don’t come and have a strong mentality away from home and have that physical presence to wear down teams, then you will come unstuck.

“We’ve done a very professional job in terms of three goals for us, none against and also the three points.”

The result ensured it was a third straight league win and lifted Fleet up to fourth in the Conference South table just two points off leaders Havant, form Brown is understandably keen to continue.

He said: “All we can do is keep getting the results and pushing ourselves closer and closer to the top of the league.

“I sat with the team and discussed things.

“A month ago it was a little bit like loss-draw-loss, but we’ve responded brilliantly and bounced back with wins.”

Brown added: “I have to give a lot of the credit to my staff and my players for understanding the position we’re in and responding accordingly.

“You’ve got to do your jobs right and the responses of the substitutes Chris Sessegnon, Jordan Sanderson and Matt Godden when they came off the bench today were excellent.

“It gave us a nice boost when they came on with energy. It’s about the squad and making sure they’re as one in trying to achieve success for Ebbsfleet United.”
