Igor Vetokele admitted he is surprised how well the season has started for him personally following Charlton’s 2-2 draw at Brighton.

The striker scored both of the Addicks’ goals on the south coast to take his tally up to five, already making him the Championship’s joint top scorer with Norwich’s Lewis Grabban.

But the Angolan international said even he didn’t see such a fine goal scoring start coming following his summer switch to England from FC Copenhagen.

“No, I didn’t expect it to be honest,” explained Vetokele.

“I’m just trying to do my best, and my team-mates are helping me by creating opportunities.

“I just try to score and do the best with the opportunities that I get.

“I’ll try to keep on going like that but I know it won’t be for the whole season!

“Hopefully I can keep going like this for as long as possible.”

Charlton took the lead on four minutes after Vetokele’s low 20-yard drive crept in at David Stockdale’s near post, an advantage they held until Lewis Dunk’s headed equaliser from a corner in the 67th minute.

Parity didn’t last long, though, as Vetokele’s second of the game, converting a fine Simon Church cross, restored Charlton’s lead with quarter of an hour remaining.

But there was to be late heartbreak for the Addicks, as they failed to clear a 93rd minute corner and were punished once again by a headed Dunk goal, creeping in off the underside of the bar.

Despite the late setback, the in-form front man was happy that Charlton were able to take a point from a side who have reached the play-offs for the past two years.

Vetokele said: “It’s a good result.

“If you see the way we played, it wasn’t our best game today.

“Offensively we didn’t create that much if you compared it to the other games, so a point is not that bad.

“It feels like a defeat because of the goal against us in the last minute.”

Vetokele was brought to the club by head coach Bob Peeters, having previously worked under the Belgian at Cercle Brugge, and is happy to be linked up with him again.

The striker added: “He gave me a chance in Belgium and I tried to take it with both hands.

“I’m lucky to work again with him, I like working with him.

“I try to pay him back for the chances he’s given me. “

Vetokele was playing in Europe’s top competition at his previous club in Denmark, but claims he has no regrets about joining the Addicks in the Championship.

“In Copenhagen I was playing Champions League, but the league over here is much more intense - many more games, more teams, more quality.

“It’s better for me as a player to improve and to learn.”
