Martyn Woolford believes Millwall’s primary target should still be to avoid relegation this season, despite their strong start to the campaign.

Saturday’s 2-1 home victory over Blackpool means the Lions sit in the play-off places going into the internatonal break having picked up 10 points from their opening five league games.

But Woolford, who netted the decisive goal against Bournemouth as Millwall secured their Championship status on the final day of last term, is keeping things in perspective.

“It is still early doors and we’re still looking at it one game at a time,” he said.

“First at foremost, we need to make sure that we’ve got enough points on the board to be well away from the relegation zone like where we were last season.

“The earlier we can get them on the board, the sooner we can start looking up to the other end of the table.

“It is too early to be saying we’re going to be doing this and that, we just need to concentrate and learn from our mistakes - even when we’ve won a game.

“We need to make sure we pick the bones out of things and keep learning all the time.”

Scott McDonald opened the scoring on 33 minutes in the weekend’s win over the Tangerines before Scott Malone doubled the advantage just after the break.

Nile Ranger halved the deficit 20 minutes from time but Woolford thought making the early breakthrough gave the Lions the freedom to play the way they wanted to.

He said: “It helps you to relax into the game when you get the break that you deserve.

“It is frustrating when you’re playing the better football and things don’t drop for you.

“Once you break the deadlock it helps you to settle into it and lets us pass the ball, so we can show that we’re good players.”

Woolford added: “It is sometimes worse playing the teams that aren’t doing great becasue they’ve got that fight in them.

“Sometimes when teams are at the top and flying they get a little bit complacent. but it is such a tight league. There’s nothing in it.

“You see it every week that bottom teams beat top teams. You’ve got to make sure that you’re on the ball and the consistency is starting to come for us now.”
