Ebbsfleet United made it two wins out of two on Saturday as they defeated a stubborn Havant & Waterlooville side 1-0 at Stonebridge Road.

In a match otherwise low on talking points, Daryl McMahon’s superb 52nd minute long-range strike proved to be the winner.

It was the second time in a week Fleet captain McMahon inspired his side to victory after netting the first goal in their opening game 2-0 win over Concord Rangers on Tuesday night.

Home manager Steve Brown made one change from tha game, with the injured Tom Fraser being replaced by Michael Corcoran in the centre of midfield.

Hawks opposite number Lee Bradbury fielded a 4-3-3 formation that was more solid than spectacular and very difficult to break down.

The best chance of the first half came in the opening stages when an unmarked Anthony Acheampong headed an Anthony Cook corner over from six yards.

Alex Osborn then had a dipping volley well held by Hawks keeper Ryan Young.

Aside from this, there was very little for fans to get excited by as both teams huffed and puffed without much reward.

That changed seven minutes after half-time when Charlie Sheringham played a pass into the path of the onrushing McMahon, who took one touch before letting fly with a shot which flew past a diving Young and into the net from 30-yards.

Matt Godden then had two chances to tie up the win, as Anthony Cook twice set him up.

Firstly, Cook cut inside from the left-wing before rolling the ball back to the striker who angled a shot across goal and wide when he should have hit the target.

Then Cook produced a brilliant diagonal ball over the top of the defence to Godden, but his shot flew over, yet The Fleet still managed to see the game out for victory.
