Lawrie Wilson may have scored twice in Tuesday’s 4-0 League Cup demolition of Colchester - but Charlton boss Bob Peeters has yet to decide if that is enough to win a place in the line-up for Saturday’s meeting with Wigan.

Wilson was one of half a dozen players given a chance to shine as Peeters made wholesale changes to the starting XI which drew 1-1 at Brentford three days earlier.

And the versatile 26-year-old grabbed the opportunity with both hands by scoring the Addicks’ second and third goals of the evening to book a second round trip to Derby.

However, the manager was reluctant to speculate on whether Wilson’s brace was enough to retain his place against the Latics at The Valley.

Peeters said: “I still need to pick the team, but not only Lawrie I think the whole team because it is always a bit of a risk when you change six players in a squad or in a team to play a team.

“Like I said in the programme, we try to win every game and at this moment we are that far already that no matter who plays everybody knows what to do when we have the ball and when we lose the ball.

“If you have a guy like Lawrie Wilson he will never let you down in training or in a game, so you know you can bank on him.

“It all depends on the opponent for Saturday, we still need to pick a team.

“Every player who played Tuesday they’ve shown me they can play in the first team.

“Now they’ve made my decision a little bit more difficult but we will need to pick a team who we think at that point can get something out of the game against Wigan.”

Saturday’s visitors to SE7 are among the pre-season favourites to win promotion after missing out in the play-offs last year.

Peeters accepts Uwe Rosler’s side will pose a big challenge to his new look Charlton but the Addicks supremo is happy enough with the early positive signs.

He explained: “If you see our squad and you see their (Wigan’s) squad I think we are still building a team.

“If you bring in first new management, two assistants and a lot of new players you are still progressing.

“I know and I’m happy that the fans are already enthusiastic about it but we still need to be humble, work hard and we didn’t prove anything at this moment.

“We can’t compare (with Wigan), it needs another ten games to see which teams are favourites and which teams are better than the other teams.”

Peeters added: “At this moment you can’t say anything because we don’t know a lot of teams and a lot of players.

“I’ve seen a lot of games now already of Wigan analysing them and you get to know the players, but in a few weeks and months we will know the competition pretty much.

“Then we can say how tough we are compared to the others.”

Rhoys Wiggins (knock) will train tomorrow with Peeters optimistic he will be available for selection on Saturday.
