Despite falling behind early on, Welling dug in and came back well in the second half to claim a draw.

Peter Taylor, Gillingham manager, played separate teams for each half whilst Day chose to give his starting eleven a little longer before making changes during the second period.

Both teams had created openings vbefore the visitors went ahead in the eighth minute through Antonio German.

Former Wing, Danny Kedwell then headed wide before Welling came close as jake Gallagher headed just over from Loui Fazakerley’s angled ball in.

Amine Legane headed wide and Kedwell had an effort cleared off the line as the Gills finished the first period strongly.

Doug Loft tested lee Butcher early in the second period but Welling equalised on 59 minutes.

Harry Beautyman’s corner was only half cleared and Healy executed a perfect overhead kick to give Gills goalkeeper Glenn Morris no chance.

Wings reserve goalkeeper Ali Axol saved well from Luke Norris and Bradley Dack belted a free kick wide.

Devante McKain had a header that floated on to the top of the bar and over before Welling had a golden opportunity.

Josh Hare brought Malachi tumbling down in the penalty area but Kieron St Aimie smashed the spot kick over.

The draw ended Welling’s 100 percent record but both teams were able to maintain their unbeaten pre-season campaigns.
