Former Milwall striker Bob Peeters has been appointed head coach of Charlton Athletic, the club announced yesterday evening (May 27).

The former Belgium international, who spent two years at The Den and scored three goals, takes over from José Riga.

Riga left Charlton after his short-term deal expired at the end of the season.

Peeters, 40, has been previously in charge of Cercle Bruuge and KAA Gent and arrives at The Valley after ensuring Waasland-Beveren’s survival in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.

During his playing career Peeters made 13 appearances for Belgium and scored four goals, also playing for Lierse, Roda JC Kerkrade, Vitesse Arnhem in Holland and Racing Club Genk in Belgium.

Peeters will work alongside Damien Matthew, Charlton's former academy manager and current first team coach, while former assistant manager Alex Dyer has also left the club after three-and-a-half years.
