Cray went down to a late goal at Bury Town on Saturday in a lively end of season encounter.

Despite the disappointment of last weekend’s relegation, the Wands turned in a creditable performance and were only the post away in stoppage time from rescuing a point.

The first half was fairly even with both keepers making one good stop apiece, Cray’s Darren Behcet denying Joe Whight and Bury’s number one Marcus Garnham making a fine save from Alex Stavrinou’s shot.

The second half was end-to-end.

Moses Ashikodi headed over from a fine cross by Stavrinou, and a couple a minutes later Cray were denied a penalty following a handball in the box.

Paul Vines had two attempts to score before Ross Bailey hit the post for Bury.

The winning goal came on 82 minutes when Danny Cunningham’s shot came back off the bar and the follow up cross was turned in by Nnamdi Nwachuku.

Cray fought back as Ashikodi again headed over, Jordan Bird shot wide following a corner and in the fourth minute of injury time Cesc Fakinos hit the post with a chipped shot.

The Wands are at home to East Thurrock United this evening (7.45pm).
