Jay May’s last-gasp goal ensured Bromley ended a five-game winless run with victory over Weston-super-Mare at Hayes Lane on Saturday.

A drab first half saw the visitors nearly take the lead on five minutes when Nabi Diallo ran at the Lillywhites defence, only to see his effort deflected for a corner, from which the striker volleyed past the post.

Bromley’s first attempt on goal followed six minutes later when Louis Dennis’s shot was blocked following Rob Swaine’s knock down.

While Weston were enjoying plenty of the ball, they lacked the penetration up front to force any saves out of Joe Welch, although Martin Slocombe’s shot dropped just over the bar from a mis-placed clearance.

Bromley were having constant difficulty pick out a pass to their colleagues, instead continually finding the opposition.

But they did finish the half with a couple of half chances as visiting keeper Lloyd Irish saved from Bradley Goldberg at the second attempt before the striker curled an effort just over the bar from the edge of the area.

Bromley opened the scoring from the penalty spot five minutes into the second period through Goldberg. Jack Holland’s lofted pass was allowed to run on by Jake Reid, and Goldberg, coming in on the blind side, was bundled over by Jamie Laird.

The league’s leading scorer dusted himself down to score his 21st Conference South goal of the season.

Dennis headed just over a few minutes later, but just like in the first half the visitors were having most of the play without creating anything, as Bromley sat deeper and deeper.

Swaine headed over from Joe Anderson’s corner, while Goldberg stung the keeper’s hands from 25 yards before Weston deservedly equalised on 77 minutes.

Dayle Grubb picked up possession in the centre circle to directly run at goal and after riding out two challenges, drove a shot into the far corner from just inside the area.

Substitute May headed wide from another Anderson corner and Grubb was denied at the foot of the post by Welch at the other end.

With two minutes of normal time remaining came the miss of the season.

May, with only Irish to beat from six yards, somehow contrived to stab his effort into the ground. That miss might have instantly proved costly, as Ashley Kington’s free-kick beat Welch but drifted wide of the post.

However, half way into four minutes of added time, Bromley clinched the points as May atoned for his earlier error.

Dennis did well down the left before squeezing a cross across the face of goal, where the unmarked home striker had a simple tap in at the far post.

Bromley now need just one point from their remaining three games to guarantee a place in the play-offs.

The Lillywhites visit Tonbridge Angels on Saturday and are back at Hayes Lane on Easter Monday to host Bishop’s Stortford (both 3pm kick-offs).
