Ian Holloway has played down his spat with Watford fans following Saturday’s 2-2 draw at The Den.

The Millwall boss appeared to aim a two-fingered gesture to the visiting fans at full-time but Holloway insists it was not in a derogatory ay.

He explained: “I said it was 2-2 because they were calling me something that you should not be called.

“Is that tongue in cheek? Of course it is.

“I used the same hand twice. Is there anything wrong with that?

"It must be sour grapes. I did my job and they didn't like it.

"I have never done anything else against them, so that must be it.

“How narrow minded are they?

“Any chance of saying ‘well done’? It’s just rubbish.

"That is what I don't like about football.

“You should be gracious in defeat, so if that’s what they want to do just because I managed to beat them then they can jog on.”

Holloway was keen to play down the incident afterwards, stressing it had all been blown out of proportion.

The Lions boss said: “I just don't understand it, Watford fans are meant to be nice people.

“I don’t know who they were in the away end, and I won’t be sending any of them a card at Christmas, but I don’t really care because we got a vital point.

“They were lucky to be 2-1 up in the first place.

“I don’t think a ground should be allowed to sing something like that, not with young people in the crowd.

“If I’m going to get in trouble I do apologise, but my excuse is 2-2 and I probably should have turned my hands the other way.

“I knew what I was doing, though.

“If people can’t see the funny side of that, the fourth official did, he was laughing his head off!

“If I’ve offended anybody I don't care because they've offended me by screaming at me.”

Holloway added: “It was not a lewd gesture at all, it was the score.

“How finicky are we getting if you can’t have a little bit of banter?

“Was I fighting with their dugout?

“Do I bring the game into disrepute?

“I don’t think so, I think I make the game a nicer place to be.

“It is a bit of banter, we needed the points and I’m still jovial.

“I got a point, they got a point, so what’s wrong with that?”
