Jose Riga declared Charlton’s performance against Barnsley tomorrow will be unrecognisable from Saturday’s abject defeat at Brighton.

The Addicks conceded early at the AMEX Stadium and were eventually comfortably beaten 3-0 by the south coast play-off chasers.

Riga was left disappointed with his side’s display after they failed to register a shot on target, but promised Charlton would be vastly improved in Tuesday night’s relegation six-pointer.

The Valley head coach said: “We were not good enough, I have to say the truth.

“Against this kind of team we have to be individually and collectively at 100 percent or more - and we were not.

“My thought is we have had to compete a lot every three days.

“We have played the most games lately and we have a lot of young players. We had found some balance in the team that gave us good results recently.

“That Charlton you saw on Saturday was not the one that has taken points and has competed with other teams - and it is certainly not the team that you will on Tuesday.

Riga added: “We are better than what we showed against Brighton and we have to think that we can do it (stay up).

“We are not relegated and we are in a good position.

“Instead of thinking that we can lose everything, we must think that we can win everything.”

Riga then maintained again fatigue may have had an impact on his side’s poor performance at the weekend.

“We always think that we are able to create a chance but scoring them is another story sometimes,” said the Charlton boss.

“The problem is that we have played so many games.

“I was afraid of this kind of game but I would rather it happened against Brighton than on Tuesday against a direct opponent for relegation.

“As a manager you hope to avoid this kind of day and the players are able to do better.

“We offered Brighton their first goal on Saturday and it became more difficult than it was already.

“This kind of result can always happen, but we have built something consistent in the past and we have to think about that for the next game.”
