Welling United completed the league double over Chester with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Park View Road, despite being reduced to 10-men just after half an hour.

Before the game, the announcement manager Jamie Day had signed on for another two years cheered the home supporters in the 706 crowd.

Day made changes to the team which had lost to Braintree on Tuesday night, with leading scorer Ross Lafayette returning and Vasilious Karagiannis selected for his full debut.

Karagiannis made a good impression early on when collecting a long pass, wrong-footing Michael Kay and then slinging in a low cross just beyond Ross Lafayette and Tobi Sho-Silva.

Harry Beautyman whipped in a free-kick that fell to Lee Clarke but he could only stab directly at Aaron Chapman.

Although he couldn’t hold onto it, the Chester keeper was quick to smother Blaine Hudson’s follow up.

Lafayette then sent Karagiannis away, but his shot from the left went beyond Chapman and also the far post.

However, Welling suffered a big setback as Jake Gallagher was dismissed on 31 minutes for a late tackle.

Whether it was a red card offence was debatable, but flying in where there was no real danger gave the referee the opportunity to send him off.

Despite this obvious drawback, Welling continued to create the better openings.

Beautyman dispossessed Andy Bond and sent Lafayette away but the Wings’ talisman shot wide.

He created another chance for himself minutes later when cutting in from the right, but his shot was held at the near post.

Just before the break, Chester mustered their first shot on goal with a volley claimed comfortably by Lee Butcher.

Although being a player short curtailed Loui Fazakerley and Barney Williams’ opportunities to go on raids down the wings, Welling still looked the more dangerous and it was no surprise when they went ahead in the 57th minute.

Sho-Silva’s intelligent pass put Karagiannis away and he gave Chapman no chance with a crisp finish.

The debutant celebrated by pulling his shirt up over his head and was booked before being substituted for Toby Alaja prior to play resuming.

Further changes were made six minutes later when Joe Healy, who had started every previous league and FA Cup match, replaced Clarke, with Josh Wakefield also coming on in place of Beautyman.

Kay shot wide for Chester, but they struggled against the central defensive partnership of Hudson and Quade Taylor as Welling continued to cause problems on the break.

Healy sent Sho-Silva away but he dinked wide of the near post with the outside of his right boot.

Craig Mahon skewed an effort wide after making the opening for himself before Welling made the game safe with a minute remaining.

Wakefield broke away and took his time before crossing to Lafayette, whose controlled volley went in via the far post.

Welling can now enjoy a week without a midweek game to continue to get players fit for next Saturday’s game at Alfreton.
