Charlton's Achilles heel again proved to be their lack of bite in front of goal as they were beaten 3-0 by Burnley at The Valley on Saturday.

The Addicks, who remain out of the Championship relegation zone on goal difference, started brightly but fell behind to Ashley Barnes’ header after Simon Church had missed a guilt-edged chance.

After the break Sam Vokes converted a penalty, and Johnnie Jackson deflected in a late third, but head coach Jose Riga believes the outcome could have been different if they had scored first.

He said: “Scoring is our main problem, and it is not a new one.

“That is why, I repeat from the first day, we have to solve this problem all together.

“We need sometimes to bring a lot of players around the box to be to be able to score.

Burnley's first goal against Charlton

“We had to be smart but we didn’t show enough consistency in terms of scoring.

“We were looking to create chances and be organised.

“We had the first two chances, not big ones, but enough to score but it didn’t happen.

“Then on their first or second chance they scored. That was the big difference.

“Burnley played intelligently and it was more difficult because they didn’t play on Tuesday.

“It became more and more difficult during the game, but I am sure the result of 3-0 is not what we saw during the game.

“We knew that it would be difficult, but we could have seen another game had we scored first.”

The defeat was Riga’s first since taking charge almost a fortnight ago.

In fact, Barnes’ header was the first goal the Addicks had conceded under the new boss, but he believed that the promotion contenders deserved the win.

A Sam Vokes penalty put Burnley further ahead

Riga said: “We knew before the game that Burnley is a very efficient team, really a team about the collaboration, about the involvement of all the players physically, and of course some key players.

“They don’t need a lot of chances to score and they defend well.

“A defeat is a defeat. I would prefer one 3-0 than three 1-0s, but it is clear also that we were quite unlucky at some moments in the game.

“But you have to keep the luck and put it on your side, not wait for it.

“We won’t always win the games or be consistent all the time.

“It is about efficiency and we are looking to find solutions.”
