Threadbare Welling United visited second placed Cambridge United struggling to find a full squad, yet can still feel unfortunate to have returned home with nothing.

Jamie Day had to bring in Quade Taylor on loan from Crystal Palace whilst drafting in Barney Williams who has spent the season at Ryman Division One North leaders VCD Athletic.

News Shopper: Toby Ajala beats a Cambridge defender

Whilst both teams played some good football in midfield, goalmouth action was at a premium in the first forty-five minutes.

Tom Champion had the first effort for Cambridge but for all their pretty football they did not hurt a very hard working Welling team who played some neat football of their own.

Toby Ajala had Welling's first shot at goal after clever work by Lee Clarke but he fired over from a very tight angle.

After just 25 minutes, Ross Lafayette had to retire injured and was replaced by Harry Cornick.`

Cornick had Welling's first shot on target after collecting Joe Healy's pass but his daisy-cutter was saved comfortably by Norris.

p> Nathan Arnold's running caused problems, and Ryan Donaldson had to be well marshalled by Loui Fazakerley but Welling enjoyed the better of the half with Clarke and Healy pulling the strings.

Ajala had the last chance of the half but fired over after a half cleared corner.

Richard Money, Cambridge's manager, made two changes at the break and his team came out with much more purpose.

Richard Tait's deep cross was headed over by Liam Hughes before a bullet shot by Donaldson was turned away brilliantly by Lee Butcher.

Delano Sam-Yorke missed a great chance firing over from close range before Welling were forced into a second change.

Malik Ouani, who has spent the season at Waltham Forest, replaced Ajala before Butcher was again called upon to save when tipping over Adam Cunnington's header.

Finally the pressure told when a stretching Fazakerley mis-timed his tackle on Donaldson to concede a penalty and earn himself a caution.

Cunnington stepped up and although Butcher guessed correctly, the shot had too much accuracy and power for him.

Lesser teams might have folded but Cornick's low cross seemed certain to be finished at the far post until Tait slid in to make a miraculous intervention at the cost of a corner.

After waiting for former Wings' fans favourite Andy Pugh to replace the injured Cunnington, Josh Wakefield slung in a great delivery for Tobi Sho-Silva to rise and head home inside the far post.

Cambridge regained their lead from Welling's next corner.

A quick counter-break saw Pugh send Sam-Yorke away and he outpaced the Wings defence before shooting low inside the far post.

Hughes headed wide for Cambridge before the Wings might have had a penalty of their own.

Another foraging Cornick run ended with a shot that appeared to be handled.

Sho-Silva played on and his looped header was tipped onto the bar and over.

Donaldson cut in and shot over for Cambridge then Ouani burst through three defenders but shot into the side netting.

Further half chances were created by two low Ouani crosses that were defended unconvincingly but fell kindly for the hosts.

Hughes had a shot locked by Alfie Mawson, Cornick had a shot deflected and saved for Welling then Pugh had a shot diverted wide for a corner at the other end.

Cambridge held out and claimed a morale boosting win ahead of their F.A. Trophy final date at Wembley on Sunday.
