Alex Wall’s late, late goal for Dartford at Cambridge United’s Abbey Stadium led to a steady stream of disgruntled home supporters heading for the exits.

The buoyant 150+ Dartford fans present on Saturday struck up their famous fire drill chant as the final moments of an absorbing game allowed Tony Burman’s side to pick up a vital point.

It wasn’t quite the six-goal encounter both sides had played out at Princes Park earlier this year when the game ended in a hurricane and monsoon rains.

That match had provoked some nonsense comments about plastic pitches, but the conditions were certainly not an issue this weekend.

Dartford welcomed back Kenny Clark, who quickly got into his stride and indeed had a couple of cracks at goal early on.

Danny Harris was his usual lively self and created a chance for Lee Burns early on but he just missed out.

Cambridge appeared to be far from their best in the first half but hit more of their true form after the break.

They had two big chances, one which Josh Coulson sent over and the other which Tyrone Sterling blocked.

But midway through the half Cambridge took the lead when Tom Elliott got on the end of a testing cross to put the hosts in front.

Darts had the better of the final quarter as Lee Noble took control of the game and his efforts were inspired enough to set Elliot Bradbrook off on a run deep into injury time.

He set up Wall, who unleashed an unstoppable shot past Kevin Roberts to level the scores and secure a deserved point.

The result leaves Darts five points from safety but they will be confident of closing the gap this weekend when they travel to rock bottom Hyde (3pm).
