Davidson urges fellow Charlton fans to back new Valley owners
Sacking your manager the night after an FA Cup quarter-final may sound laughable to some supporters, so who better to comment on Charlton Athletic’s travails than life-long fan and popular comedian Jim Davidson.
In an interview with Vibe, the 60-year-old Celebrity Big Brother winner urged fans to get behind the club’s Belgian owners.
He said: “First of all, you have to thank Roland for buying the club, otherwise we wouldn’t be having this conversation, we’d be saying ‘what a shame Charlton doesn’t exist any more’.
“Charlton fans are great people and I’m sure we’ll support the new owners as long as they have Charlton’s best interests at heart.
“If we sniff that they don’t have Charlton’s best interests at heart then there’ll be trouble.
“I’ve met the woman that runs the place, director Katrien Meire, and I think she is dedicated to Charlton and I think they are in for the long run.”
Despite his backing for the owner, the Kidbrooke comic said he felt for the ousted manager.
I love Chrissy Powell,” he said. “I was speaking to him the other day, I was in Sheffield with him, I spoke to his sister last night.
“Chrissy Powell was man enough to say to this owner ‘no, I want to pick my own team and I want to play the way I play’.
“Unfortunately, the owner doesn’t want that. The owner is the owner.”
He added: “I think all the Charlton fans love Chris and have a place for him in our hearts, but it’s the club. “It’s our club and we’ll go on.
“The King is dead, long live the King.”
With Charlton precariously positioned at the foot of the Championship, Jim thinks the Addicks have what it takes to stay in the division.
He said: “We could have done without selling Yann Kermorgant really, but I’m sure we’ll go on.
“We have got a few games in hand and we have got the old enemy on Saturday (Millwall) so I think, yes, they’ll stay up. They’re too good a club to go down.”
