Ibox gym in Bromley is gaining a reputation as a major force in boxing after recent successes for a number of their fighters.

The eight-man boxing team have attracted attention after performances by Penge-based welterweight Bradley ‘Super’ Skeete and Crayford’s Lewis Pettitt at the Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park on February 15.

Extending his unbeaten record to 15, Skeete claimed the vacant WBA intercontinental welterweight title in impressive fashion against Christopher Sebire.

And trainer Eddie Lam already has one eye on the international stage for Skeete.

“It’s all about timing with Bradley,” Lam said.

“He should win the British title soon and then we’ll move him on to the European stage.

“We won’t get too big for our boots too soon.

“We’ll see what happens and take every step as it comes.”

Pettitt’s victory over Elemir Rafael on the same evening quenched the Crayford star’s thirst for more illustrious prizes, with an expected WBA international fight on the cards on April 12 at the CopperBox as part of the Tyson Fury bill which will also see Skeete back in action.

Lam said: “Lewis should be getting a title shot in April.

“I can’t say too much, as nothing has been finalised, but he should be fighting for a big title.

“Lewis is definitely capable of bigger things.

“I would imagine that we’ll be looking at a Commonwealth title before a British title shot later this year – then we’ll go from there.”

The growing reputation of Ibox isn’t just attracting members from south east London though, as Lam explains.

“The amateur game is quite big in Bromley but then a lot of fighters move on to London gyms.

“We’re probably the first professional gym in the area. We’ve got eight good fighters now.

“One comes all the way from Brighton and one comes from Bournemouth, so we don’t have a problem attracting fighters to Bromley.

“We’ve not had to advertise, we’ve just grow on our own success.

“As the likes of Bradley Skeete have grown, so have we.”

Lam was keen to praise the influence of former trainers Mick Carney and Billy Webster of the Fitzroy Lodge for his own success in the sport.

He said: “They were great boxing coaches, I was with them for more than 21 years and I learnt everything from them.

“I miss fighting and that’s what keeps me involved.

“If I wasn’t a coach, I’d probably be making a comeback every couple of years.”

Working alongside Lam at Ibox are professional coaches Al Smith and Nik Sivyer, as well as strength and conditioning coach Gavin Lander.

A busy couple of months are scheduled for the team, with confirmed dates to look forward to including Lloyd Ellett’s bout at the Hilton, Brighton, this Saturday.

Brett Beadon and Adam Dingsdale are both in action at York Hall on March 8 and Ian Weaver makes an appearance in Bournemouth on March 15.

The following month Ricky Boylan and Johnny Garton are scheduled to appear on Sky Sports’ April 5 Prizefighter Bill on April 5, before Skeete and Pettitt fight on April 12 at the CopperBox.

Tickets for The Power Of London show at the CopperBox on April 12 are priced at £40, £50, £70 and £100, are available from Eventim on 0844 249 1000 or at eventim.co.uk
