Wiggins: QPR win sets us up perfectly for Owls cup tie
RHOYS Wiggins says Charlton can use the confidence taken from Saturday’s victory over QPR to get a result at Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup this evening.
Wednesday are favourites to progress into the last eight of the competition but after Johnnie Jackson’s 92nd minute winner against the Hoops, Wiggins feels anything is possible.
Whoever emerges from the tie will earn a trip to Sheffield United for the quarter-finals knowing a visit to Wemberly beckons for any side which gets to the semis.
Wiggins said: “Sheffield Wednesday is a tough place to go but on the back of today I can’t see why we can’t go up there and get a result.
“To get a result like we did against QPR, who are going for promotion, shows what we can do and has given us all a massive boost.
“These results will also help the team because we have had a lot of new faces come in since January.
“They all want to do well for the team and we are still learning how each other like to play.”
Wiggins is hoping Saturday’s triumph at The Valley will be the catalyst for an improved end to what has been a disappointing campaign so far for the Addicks.
In what is likely to be a hard-fought battle to avoid relegation, Wiggins would be forgiven for concentrating on the league.
But the defender can’t hide excitement ahead of this evening’s cup game.
Wiggins said: “If we can get through this round we get Sheffield United next and that is a good draw for us because we may be able to get somewhere in the cup.
“If we can go to Sheffield Wednesday and get a result then everyone gets that little bit more belief and that little lift we need.
“We have got a lot of big games coming up, so if you can get on a run then you are not waiting around too long to play the next one so the cup is a good distraction if anything.
“But hopefully it is all coming together for a big push towards the end of the season.”
The Welsh international also praised captain Jackson, not just for his performance on Saturday but also for his ability to perform on a consistent basis.
In Charlton’s Leauge One promotion season Jackson scored free-kicks in consecutive 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United.
And Addicks fans will be hoping for more of the same tonight.
Wiggins said: “Johnnie comes up with some big goals at important times for us.
“All of them play a part - he has got that in him and has done it for years now.
“He is a massive player for us because he is our captain and he leads by example.”
