CHARLTON have apologised after a completely innocent supporter was kicked out The Valley and arrested by police over racist abuse.

Police arrested the 44-year-old man, from Kent, after he was ejected on February 8 during the match against Birmingham.

On online forums, fans have claimed they tried to point out that the wrong man had been apprehended, but their protests were ignored.

A club spokesman said: "The club would also like to apologise to a supporter who was incorrectly identified in relation to the incident and passed on to local police on Saturday.

"The individual concerned, who has been completely exonerated from any blame, accepts it was the result of a genuine error made in good faith and has offered his personal support to helping the club combat all forms of racism."

They added: "Following a detailed examination of the available CCTV footage a suspect has now been identified and the club are currently working with police to locate them."

After the game, Addicks player Cédric Evina wrote in a tweet, since deleted: "Racist abuse especially from own fans isn't acceptable! #disgraceful."
