CHARLTON manager Chris Powell has reassured the club’s fans he is staying at The Valley despite reports suggesting he was upset with new owner Roland Duchatelet.

The stories surfaced late last week as Yann Kermorgant and Dale Stephens were heading out of the club before transfer deadline day.

But the boss dismissed the reports as idle gossip, saying he is very positive about his relationship with Duchatelet and that both are fully committed to ensuring Charlton stay in the Championship.

Powell said: “These sorts of rumours will always come up because it’s something new, and I am not naive to that fact.

“I know I have to get results but I will remain as Charlton manager and will look to do my best for this football club, as I always have done and always will do.

“My relationship with the owner is a new relationship and he is someone who I am getting used to and he is getting used to me, but in that respect it is good.

“We communicate daily on the phone and via email because he is a very busy man.

“I am the manager at Charlton and I want to continue to be manager at Charlton.”

After the unpopular decisions to move on Kermorgant and Stephens during the window, sacking the manager now would potentially cause outrage among fans at The Valley.

Powell has brought stability back to the club since his arrival in 2011, winning promotion to the Championship in his first full season and consolidating their place there last year with a ninth-placed finish.

Despite the lack of current form and sale of Kermorgant and Stephens, Powell hopes the new players brought in over the transfer window can help transform the club’s season.

He said: “We have got new players that have come in and we are looking for them to get straight into the pace of the Championship and lend their qualities to the team to improve us.

“We have a very different squad compared to the beginning of January.

“But we were always looking to add to the squad, which I haven’t been in a position to do for a while.

“It is a new squad and a fledgling squad, and I have got to do my best to get the best out of them.

“The players will get used to each other straight away and hopefully it will lend to us getting the points that we need.”
