MILLWALL striker John Marquis has this afternoon put pen to paper on a new one-year deal with the club.

The 21-year-old has moved up through the youth ranks at The Den and has so far made 39 appearances, scoring five goals, most notably a last minute winner to secure a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa in the FA Cup 12 months ago.

“I’m really happy to sign for another year,” he said. “My contract was coming to an end and it’s always a worrying time.

“The new manager has come in and seen enough of me, and the people above have seen enough to feel I warranted another year.”

Marquis has seen his chances limited at Millwall this season but feels his loan stints at Portsmouth and Torquay have made him a better player.

“I haven't yet had any minutes under my belt under the new manager,” he said.

“But the first half of the season for me I was not really given a chance at Millwall.

“It has made me a better player by going out and playing, improving and scoring goals.

“Hopefully how I’ve got a little but more experience, even if it is only 10 or 11 games.

“If I do get my chance for Millwall I’ll be able to show I’m a much more mature and developed player.”

Marquis added: “I just want to pay as many games as I can, hopefully the manager gives me a chance here.

“I just want to play for Millwall “That’s been by dream the whole time, just to play regularly for Millwall.

“Hopefully I can do enough in training to get a chance and when I do, to take my chance.”

The Den youngster also praised the impact new manager Ian Holloway has had on the team.

“He’s obviously a bubbly manager with great enthusiasm and has brought that into the players.

“Where we were a little down and flat for the first six months of the season, he’s given us a new lease of life.

“He’s behind us all and has a great belief that we’re going to be able to stay up this season and next season, push on to the top half and even the top six.”
