WESTCOMBE Park edged out Thurrock on Saturday, writes Mike Attewell.

This was never to be a high-scoring game but Thurrock’s try from winger Mark Sullivan and Combe’s penalty from Iain Gordan briefly gave the lie to that before both teams got bogged down.

Westcombe Park did not profit from a red card at the end of the first quarter and three missed kicks cost Thurrock badly.

Despite this, a Frankie Neale penalty gave the Essex side a narrow 8-3 advantage.

The visitors from Orpington up-rated their performance in the second half but still couldn’t break Thurrock’s sound defence and the only real chance fell to the home side with the missed penalty.

When Combe’s increased pressure produced a result, only 10 minutes remained.

Tim Kavanagh profited with the try after grinding work between the packs, but Gordan’s kick sealed the win.
