RACHEL Dickens made an instant impact in her first year in the senior age group as the Blackheath & Bromley Harrier won the south of England indoor 400m title at Lee Valley.

This was particularly pleasing for the 19-year-old athlete as her summer season was disrupted by injury.

She won her heat in 56.52s and then took the title in 56.43s, more than half a second clear of Windsor’s Lesley Owusu.

Her coach John Blackie enjoyed more success in the U20 age group where Shannon and Cheriece Hylton were first and second respectively in the 200m with times of 24.17s and 24.38s.

More success came in the U17 age group where Isabella Hilditch won bronze in the 300m.

Having won her heat in 42.16s she then improved to 41.96s for victory in the semi-final.

She improved further to 41.53s to take third in the final.

Days two and three of these championships take place this weekend at the same venue.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Ilori leapt 7.23m for the long jump at the Missouri open in Columbia, USA.

He also timed 7.20s for the 60m.

Samantha Milner won the shot at the Loughborough open meeting with a throw of 10.98m.
