CHARLTON boss Chris Powell conceded it looks increasingly unlikely he will be able to dip into the loan market before tomorrow’s deadline.
Thursday is last opportunity for Football League managers to strengthen their squads with temporary signings until the opening of the transfer market in January.
And despite losing Ben Hamer to injury just before kick-off last night, Powell admitted the possibility of bringing bodies in looks slim at the minute - although he wasn't ruling it out entirely.
“I’d love to say yes,” said Addicks chief following his side’s 2-0 win over Doncaster.
“I’m trying to fight my corner to do it, but we’ll have to wait and see.
“We are looking to get the younger boys out, but now I am kind of loathed to do that with what has happened to Ben Hamer.
“It is important we keep as many fit bodies as we can.
“We have got one or two coming back.
“Chris Solly is training now but he will need a number of weeks.
“We will wait and see what the next 48 hours brings.”
Hamer landed awkwardly in the warm-up and is being sent for an X-ray today to discover the seriousness of his leg injury.
That leaves his deputy Ben Alnwick (above), who kept a clean sheet in last night’s win, as the only fit keeper at the club after Nick Pope was loaned to York City last week.
Usually a club cannot recall a player within the first 28 days of a loan deal, but Powell revealed the rule is slightly different for keepers.
He said: “The Football League do it by a game by game basis.
“They look at what you have at the club and we only have one fit keeper, so once we know more about Ben Hamer we will have to speak to the Football League.
“It’s a shame because we wanted Nick to go out and get some games and he’s just got a clean sheet, but we will know more later today.
“Normally you can’t call a player back in the first 28 days, but I think they do special dispensation for goalkeepers.”
