Powell expects late decision on striker's fitness at Birmingham
CHARLTON will leave it to the last minute to decide whether Yann Kermorgant is fit for Saturday’s game at Birmingham City.
The striker has struggled with injuries this season and suffered yet another setback when replaced by Marvin Sordell in the first half of Sunday’s 0-0 Valley draw with Wigan.
Although the latest problem isn’t thought to be too serious, Chris Powell says it is still touch and go whether the big Frenchman will lead the line at Blues.
The Valley manager said: “He has got an outside chance but I want to leave it as late as possible.
“Him and Richard Wood had to come off with knocks.
“They are two players who are key to this squad so we will give them as long as we can and hopefully they will be OK.
“Yann landed awkwardly, it wasn’t a kick or anything he just landed awkwardly and sadly that’s just the way it has been going for him recently.
“He is in good hands and he is coming along so he has got an outside chance, that’s all I can say.
“We will see because we’ve done without him before.
“If that’s the case then we will get on with it.”
On other injury news, Powell added: “Leon Cort is a few weeks away still.
“He has actually had another operation, just a small one to clear up what is going on there, so he is another two to four weeks away I’d say.
“Chris Solly is running now on the auto-gym machine we have and hopefully he will be outside in the next seven to ten days.
“He is looking OK, he is getting on with his work and hopefully he will be joining in with the squad sometime in November.”
One man edging closer to a start is skipper Johnnie Jackson, who came off the bench late on for Jordan Cousins in the Wigan game.
“Johnnie Jackson is in the squad,” said Powell.
“He has come back when the side are doing OK but he is chomping at the bit, he wants to be involved and it is something I will have to balance up and make sure when I put him in he is right and ready to contribute to our season.”
