Church determined to maintain scoring form after Blackburn winner
CHARLTON striker Simon Church revealed he was delighted with the way things are going after netting for both club and country.
The Welsh international rounded off a great week by netting a sixth minute winner for the Addicks at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, having already scored in his country’s 1-0 win against Macedonia.
Church admitted he was happy with his current form, but was also quick to stress how important it is for him to continue to play first team football for Charlton on a consistent basis.
“It’s been a good couple of weeks”, he said.
“Going away and playing internationally and getting a couple of goals has been great and it meant I came here confident.
“I was really pleased with the goal, but the performance was the main thing and we got the three points.
“We were really solid and built on the last couple of games, so it’s important to keep that going.
“The more games I play, the more goals I get hopefully.
“It’s all about playing, as I haven’t played consistently for two years.
“We’ve got a lot of competition up front, so it’s important for me to keep scoring and working hard in order to progress.”
The victory at Ewood Park was Chris Powell’s side first away win of the season and means they are now unbeaten in three games, which Church believes is down to the side doing the basics well.
“It’s a great day,” he said.
“Off the back of our last couple of performances, we were feeling a lot more solid and we really wanted to go out today and get three points.
“It was important to get an early goal and then we defended brilliantly throughout. It’s a tough league and it’s a tough game whoever we play against.
“It’s all about learning from our mistakes and I think we’ve done that, as we started off quite slowly.
“But in the past couple of games we’ve really gone back to basics and defended well, so it’s been a case of getting in front and then staying in front.
“I thought out defensive shape was top notch today.”
