FC Halifax Town 3-0 Welling United
12:44am Sunday 20th October 2013 in Sport
INJURIES and illness struck Welling United as FC Halifax took full advantage of a disrupted Wings team to win the game before half-time.
Jamie Day was forced into making replacements, bringing himself and Blaine Hudson in as replacements for Alex Dyer and Jack Obersteller.
Baily Cargill moved away from his normal central defensive position to cover at left back whilst Jake Gallagher played in a more advance position than his normal role just in front of the back four.
Even without the problems, Welling would have been hard pressed facing Halifax's impressive Shay Stadium form.
It took just six minutes for Halifax to go ahead, and it was the first of three goals to be scored from right wing crosses.
Adam Smith crossed to the far post where Lee Gregory met it with a powerful header that was palmed out brilliantly by Lee Butcher but Gregory was first to the rebound to nod home.
Danny Lowe was lucky to escape a booking for a cynical tug on Loick Pires' shirt as he was pulling away and Welling felt even more hard done by when Blaine Hudson was cautioned soon after.
Two long balls over the top were cleared by Lee Butcher before Halifax went further ahead.
Ryan Toulson crossed to the far post, Smith headed back, and Gregory finished spectacularly from close range.
Gregory completed his hat-trick soon after when putting away another Toulson cross.
Toulson's needless foul on Pires in the penalty area offered Welling a lifeline just before the break, but Kurtis Guthrie's spot kick was saved by Matt Gleenon.
Early in the second period Guthrie attempted an audacious lob that floated over Glennon's bar, then he laid back to Gallagher who volleyed wide.
After Matty Pearson had been booked Lee Gregory beat an unimpressive offside trap but shot meekly at Butcher.
Substitute John McReady burst through but Butcher did very well to stand up and block.
Another Guthrie shot was palmed away before Butcher made a late save from Paul Marshall just before the final whistle.
Welling United: Butcher, Fazakerley, Cargill, Day, Franks, Hudson, Gallagher, Clarke, Guthrie, Pires (Hughes-Mason 67), Healy. Unused substitutes: Turner, Cornes, Griffin.
