Westcombe Park 39-21 Thurrock
9:46am Tuesday 15th October 2013 in Sport
WESTCOMBE Park survived a second half scare to pick up only their second win of the season at home to Thurrock.
Thurrock, without a win so far, must have been looking to get their own season underway, but it looked ominous for the Essex side as Combe raced away to a 29-9 half-time lead.
Combe opened up and stretched the visitors' defence to score four tries through Ben Hough (2), Alex Smith and Thiboud Calohard, with three conversions and one penalty for Iain Gordon.
Thurrock kicked three penalties from full-back Frankie Neale in reply.
With a bonus point in the bag, Combe should have kicked on.
However, a second half recovery saw the Thurrock pack force two tries, with one converted by Neale.
Thurrock were right back in the game at 29-21 going into the last quarter, but Combe held their nerve and denied the visitors any more opportunities, closing the game out with one more Gordon penalty and a try for Mark Nimmo in the corner in the final minutes.
