Dolan secures novice middleweight crown
11:20am Thursday 26th September 2013 in Sport
SIDCUP boxer Tom Dolan claimed the vacant Queensbury novice middleweight title at Epsom racecourse after beating Naethan Hutcheon on points.
Making his fourth appearance in the Queensbury Boxing League, Dolan produced another accomplished performance in front of the capacity crowd to take the verdict on all three judges’ scorecards, much to the delight of his army of friends and family.
In the build up to the contest, the 22-year-old Sidcup ace had predicted he would be in the shape of his life for his biggest night between the ropes.
And Dolan made good on his pre-fight prediction, dominating the contest with some heavy punches.
Talking after the contest to the Daily Sports boxing correspondent Paul Zanon, the newly-crowned champion said he was very happy with his performance and delighted to get his hands on the title.
“Naethan wasn’t the original opponent I was set to face for the title, but I’d been training for a big punching come forward style fighter so I was well prepared,” revealed Dolan.
“The plan was to stick behind the jab all night and it worked perfectly, as I was able to keep Naethan at range and also unload my right hand on occasions so I’m really happy how the fight panned out.
“I think all the work and training I did in the build up to the fight was the crucial factor.
“I’ve been sparring with guys as big as heavyweights and doing eight three minute rounds, so I knew the fitness was there and I’m just really grateful for the training they all put me through.
“What’s up next for me I really don’t know, but I’ve definitely got my eye on some of the bigger names in the division so we’ll just have to wait and see what the league has in store.”
With Dolan now a major fixture in arguably the most talent stacked division in the UK’s premier boxing league, he can look ahead to bigger nights on the horizon when he returns to action to make the first defence of his newly acquired crown.
