Bromley 3-2 Basingstoke
11:17am Tuesday 24th September 2013 in Sport
BROMLEY remain within a point of leaders Eastleigh after Saturday’s entertaining Hayes Lane triumph over Basingstoke.
The visitors had the better of the early exchanges and Shaun McAuley was denied by Bromley keeper Lewis Carey before Jack Holland did well to block Kezie Ibe at the expense of a ninth minute corner.
From Adam Green’s delivery, Ibe hooked the ball onto the bar and it rebounded kindly to Matt Partridge for a simple tap in to put Basingstoke ahead.
Bromley were back on level terms 10 minutes later with a fine individual effort from Bradley Goldberg.
The former Charlton youngster collected possession on the touchline from Ashley Nicholls before cutting across goal to fire a 20-yard swerving volley past the despairing dive of visiting keeper Jamie Young.
Green fired a free-kick just wide for the visitors before Bromley finished the half rather better than they had started.
Goldberg shot wide on the half hour following good work from strike partner Shamir Mullings, Brendan Kiernan fired off target when well-placed and Pierre Joseph-Dubois blazed over the bar from Danny Waldren’s tantalising cross.
The pressure paid off in the 38th minute when Bromley went in front, as Dean Pooley’s deep cross to the far post was headed home by Mullings.
It took just five minutes of the second period for the visitors to equalise.
Bromley failed to clear their lines and McAuley drove home the loose ball to give Carey no chance.
Young saved Kiernan’s blistering drive at the second attempt one minute later, while Mullings found himself with only the keeper to beat but the youngster was a little slow in getting his shot away and a defender came in to clear.
Mullings had another chance a few moments later but shot wildly wide when it might have been better to square to an unmarked colleague in front of goal.
The visitors could have gone ahead as Matthews got clear, but his cross-shot was smothered well by Carey low down at the foot of the post.
Bromley went ahead for the second time with quarter of an hour remaining.
Ben Swallow broke quickly from the halfway line before laying a pass into the path of fellow substitute Steven Smith, who took one touch before volleying home from 20 yards.
Elliott Buchanan shot wide from 40 yards, following good work by Swallow and Goldberg, while Joseph-Dubois squared across an open goal and Goldberg headed wide.
Basingstoke nearly snatched an equaliser in the fifth minute of time added on, as Carey and Joe Anderson somehow between them managed to scramble the danger away from a visiting player at the near post.
The Lillywhites begin their FA Cup campaign at home to Burgess Hill Town on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
