LAWRIE Wilson offered his apologies to supporters after his team’s lacklustre performance in the 1-0 loss to Millwall.

The Addicks’ 17-year wait for a victory in this derby fixture continued at The Valley on Saturday on a day to forget in front of a televised audience.

And with the home side leaving the field to a chorus of boos, Wilson admitted he and his team-mates shared the pain of losing to their neighbours.

“We’d like to apologise for the loss,” he said.

“It definitely hurts us just as much.

“Fans want to see games won by us and if we’re not winning, we’re not happy and the fans are not happy.

“They’re entitled to boo but the boys will get back and hopefully get a win out of next week.”

The Lions claimed victory thanks to a deflected Scott McDonald effort seven minutes before half-time in what was a cagey lunchtime affair in SE7.

And the Charlton right-back accepted although Chris Powell’s men did not perform well on the day, they have suffered a degree of bad fortune on the pitch of late.

Wilson explained: “There’s a lot of things that went wrong in our game.

“We weren’t passing well enough and we were losing the ball in areas you can’t give the ball away cheaply.

“At the minute the luck isn’t with us.

“Things like the deflection happens in games and it just feels like the lucks not on our side at the moment.

“At times when you have a derby game, you do get sucked into playing in certain ways and it takes a strong team to get the ball down and play the way you want to play.

“But you get sucked into the occasion sometimes and you tend to do things that you maybe wouldn’t do against any other team.”

Despite the derby day disappointment, Wilson insists the Addicks have what it takes to recover as they look to kick-start their season.

“We’ll pick the points out we feel we’ve done badly and pick the good points out and we have to move on from it,” he said.

“It’s a hard result because it’s against Millwall, but we’re a strong team and we’ve got a lot of good players that can make sure we can bounce back.

“We have injuries hopefully coming back at the end of the week and we haven’t had a clean sheet yet.

“I think that’s got to be where we go from here - keeping a clean sheet and moving on from there because that’s where it starts.

“The boys are big enough to get past it and the gaffer will constantly tell us what we’re about.

“As long as we take that into games, the results will come.”
