Canty’s late try not enough for Club
Blackheath 29 Fylde 31
A terrific match and a credit to both sides, who looked to attack at every opportunity.
A fitting climax too, with Blackheath, seven points adrift, hammering at the Fylde goal-line. It brought about a try for full-back Mike Canty at the death, but fly-half David Marshall was unable to convert from out wide and the Lancastrians hung on for a third victory in three outings.
On balance, however, the visitors just about deserved it. They easily enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the opening stages, and although Marshall outscored his opposite number Chris Johnson by three penalties to two, a try from hooker Tom Burtonwood on the half-hour edged Fylde into an 11-9 lead.
Nevertheless, Blackheath’s best moment was to come and a break from wing Chris O’Neil led to inside-centre Simon Whatling scrambling across, before lock Tom Stradwick broke through to score on the stroke of half-time for a 21-11 advantage for the hosts.
But after the break the lead changed hands for a fifth time and this time the visitors were not to lose their grip.
Superb ball retention from Fylde allowed number-eight Paul Arnold to be worked across within four minutes of the re-start, before Blackheath failed to clear their lines and a cross-field move saw Burtonwood over for a second.
Johnson converted both scores beautifully from out wide and although Marshall narrowed the gap with a penalty on the hour, two further strikes from the Fylde fly-half was enough to keep the visitors just out of reach.
Blackheath’s next match takes them to Leicestershire to face Loughborough Students.
Kick-off at Towers Way on the university campus is 2.00 pm.
