Charlton 0-1 Millwall
SCOTT McDonald’s deflected first half strike was enough to secure Millwall victory against Charlton at The Valley.
The result bagged the Lions back-to-back victories and lifted more pressure off the shoulders of manager Steve Lomas.
After edging the first half, the Lions’ goal arrived on 38 minutes when McDonald’s low 25 yard strike deflected in off Dorian Dervite.
And Lomas’ men held firm in the second half to propel themselves up to 16th position in the Championship table.
Former Addicks midfielder Nicky Bailey was first to try his luck after 90 seconds when he dragged an effort well wide form 35 yards.
Johnnie Jackson shot wide from 25 yards at the other end with six minutes on the clock following a poked lay-off from Bradley Pritchard.
Mark Beevers’ timely header denied league debutant Joe Pigott an eighth minute opener when he nodded Rhoy Wiggins’ deep cross behind for a corner.
Waghorn fired straight at Hamer from 20 yards and the Lions forward was soon booked for sliding in late on Pritchard. Midway through the half Bailey again tried his luck from range, but his left-footed drive was held by Hamer.
And four minutes later Martyn Woolford sliced well wide from 25 yards after eluding the attentions of Dale Stephens.
The lively Lions went ahead on 38 minutes.
A sloppy midfield pass from Pritchard was cut out by Waghorn, who found McDonald, and his 25 yard strike deflected past Hamer via Dervite’s left calf.
The sloppy Addicks almost responded immediately as Dale Stephens slipped Jackson in but his cut-back was turned behind by the well-positioned Beevers.
Twenty three seconds after the break Stephens collected Lawrie Wilson’s drilled cross and fired wide from the edge of the box for the hosts.
Woolford saw a shot well blocked by Dervite on 52 minutes and Chris Powell shuffled his pack by introducing Cameron Stewart in place of Richard Wood.
Steve Morison replaced goal-scorer McDonald on the hour mark for Millwall and instantly glanced the ball on for Woolford who dragged wide.
The forward then nodded down to Liam Trotter, whose dipping 20 yard drive was palmed away by Hamer.
Powell brought Callum Harriott and Marvin Sordell on 72 minutes and the latter slipped Simon Church through four minutes later, but the Welshman failed to get any power on to his angled strike.
At the other end Scott Malone should have sealed the points for the Lions when he side-footed Richard Chaplow’s cut-back wide the wrong side of the post.
And in the final piece of action in a disappointing match, David Forde made his first meaningful save when he held onto Stewart’s low drive at his near post.
