Concord Rangers 2-3 Bromley
5:16pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in Sport
SECOND-placed Bromley continued their good start to the season on Tuesday evening with a fine victory at Concord Rangers.
Making their first ever visit to the Canvey Island-based side, Bromley started brightly and were rewarded with a goal after just eight minutes.
Steve Smith’s low cross into the six-yard box was only partially cleared to Elliott Buchanan, who fired a low shot through a crowd of players into the corner of the net.
Bradley Goldberg’s ambitious 25-yard effort was safety gathered by former Bromley keeper, Jamie Butler.
The hosts weathered the early pressure and Sam Collins saw his audacious chip bounce off the top of the bar before they levelled the scores on 20 minutes with Sam Higgins’ firmly struck free-kick from the edge of the area.
Concord took the lead five minutes later as Dean Pooley’s poor clearance went straight to Gary Ogilvie, who promptly volleyed home from 30 yards.
The home side were enjoying the majority of the play at this stage and Higgins was denied by a smart save from Lewis Carey before James White and Higgins both went close to increasing Concord’s lead.
Shamir Mullings and Goldberg had chances for Bromley as the half-time whistle approached, Mullings firing over and Goldberg just wide of the upright.
The second half started as the first with Bromley dominating and they were back on level terms on 51 minutes. Goldberg and substitute Brendan Kiernan combined well for the winger to send a diagonal cross into the danger zone, where Pooley came in on the blind side at the far post to equalise with a simple tap in.
Pooley was yellow carded for a rather crude tackle shortly afterwards and Higgins’ header was well saved by Carey from the resultant free-kick. But Bromley continued to press and it came as no surprise when they went ahead after 75 minutes.
A break down the left hand side saw Kiernan ghost past his marker, before laying the ball back into the path of Goldberg who calmly side-footed home for his fifth goal in eight matches.
Concord seemed to lose heart after this and Bromley comfortably played out the remainder of the game.
They might have had a fourth when Ben Swallow was unlucky to see his goal-bound shot on the turn take a wicked deflection off a defender following a cross from Goldberg.
