Welling claim a point at Southport
HAVING been in control for most of the game, Welling United had to come from behind to pick up a point when it would have been a travesty had they lost.
Luke George made a brilliant defensive header to clear a Kurtis Guthrie cross early on before the hosts managed an attempt on target.
David Fitzpatrick crossed for Chris Almond but his header was collected comfortably by Wings' keeper Lee Butcher.
Jake Gallagher's deep cross should have been collected by Danny Hurst hoever Ross Lafayette got their first only to see his header float wide.
Lafayette tested Hurst with a shot the home goalkeeper couldn't hold but when the ball came back to Alex Dyer via Joe Healy, the midfielder was unable to keep his shot down.
When Southport did look dangerous on the break, Dyer made a brilliant tackle before sending Lee Clarke away.
He then spreaded the ball wide to Loui Fazakerley who crossed for Guthrie whose first time effort came back off Hurst's legs.
Matty Flynn was cautioned for a foul but Healy's free-kick hit the wall and went for a corner.
The delivery was half cleared for Clarke to chip in but Fraser Franks, at full strength could only direct the ball at Hurst.
Clarke won the ball at the near post frolm a Souyhport corner and a long clearance by Dyer put Guthrie away. The Wings striker hit a first time effort that went wide of the near post.
Healy and Lafayette combined again just before half time, but Matty Challinor made the crucial defensive clearance.
Two minutes into the second half, Welling went ahead.
Doug Bergqvist's header was saved brilliantly by Hurst. Clarke's follow up was also blocked by the goalkeeper but he was unable to stop Clarke from finishing at the second attempt.
Having worked so hard to go ahead, it was disappointing that Welling conceded just two minutes later when an unchallenged Almond headed in off the near post.
Dyer played in Lafayette who curled the ball wide before Clarke headed a Jack Obersteller corner over.
Southport went ahead against the run of play when Almond crossed into the area, and after a big goalmouth scramble, Danny Hattersley bundled home.
Guthrie headed wide from Lafayette's cross before Southport escaped another goalmouth scramble ending with a Bergqvist close range effort being blocked.
Aaron Chalmers went for an ambitious free-kick that was saved by Lee Butcher before Welling scored the equaliser they deserved.
Franks launched a long ball forward that appeared to be drifting out but Fazakerley chased hard, kept the ball in, then crossed for Lafayette to chest down and finish emphatically.
To the credit of both teams, neither looked to settle for a point but defences had the upper hand and neither goalkeeper was bothered unduly again.
Welling United: Butcher, Fazakerley, Jack Obersteller, Gallagher, Franks. Berqvist, Dyer, Clarke (Pires), Guthrie (Hughes-Mason), Lafayette, Healy. Subs not used: Turner, Joe Obersteller, Webb.
