Millwall skipper in running for greatest captain honour
3:55pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Sport
PROSTATE Cancer UK is calling on Millwall fans to back club legend Paul Robinson in the search for the all-time greatest captain in the history of the Football League.
Robinson quickly entered the top five spots after the first round of votes from all 72 Football League nominated skippers and is now in the running to be crowned the greatest captain in the history of the Football League.
Among those the current Lions skipper is battling it out against are Billy Bremner (Leeds United), Mick Mills (Ipswich Town), Archie Gibson (Scunthorpe United) and Nat Lofthouse (Bolton Wanderers).
Lions chairman John Berylson said: “Paul Robinson is an outstanding man both on and off the field.
“It is my view that if more players had the same professionalism and attitude as Paul Robinson, the reputation of football would be greatly enhanced.
“As a captain, he leads by example and will not spare one ounce of sweat or one drop of blood in doing everything in his power to help the team win.”
Mr Berylson added: “Off the field, Paul is a great ambassador for the football club and the game.
“He recognises the privileged position he occupies and discharges his responsibilities with energy and enthusiasm.
“He sets a great example to others not only by the way he plays the game, but equally in understanding the role he fulfils in influencing and setting standards for young people, in particular, to follow."
Prostate Cancer UK’s Mark Bishop said: “Following a highly successful first season working with the Football League and its member clubs, we have taken the exciting step of formally extending our partnership for a further three years.
“As the league celebrates its 125th anniversary year, these are exciting times in our journey to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life.
“Fans have the chance to make a difference by joining Men United this season and being part of a winning team to fight this killer disease which affects one in eight men during their lifetime.
“With prostate cancer increasing at an alarming rate across our stadiums, this is one game we can’t afford to lose.
“Our greatest captain campaign aims to engage millions of football fans across the country to celebrate the Football League’s greatest sporting heroes and empower men to take urgent action by tackling the disease head on.
“I look forward to unveiling the greatest captain as voted for by the fans and look forward to inducting clubs and fans into our Men United Hall of Fame over the course of the season.”
The deadline to cast your vote for Robinson at prostatecanceruk.org/football is September 3.
