DESPITE claiming Millwall haven’t enjoyed the rub of the green so far, Lee Martin is raring to go following his first taste of action in a Lions shirt.
The former Manchester United and Ipswich winger was part of a double substitution on the hour mark which saw him and Scott McDonald replace Jermaine Easter and Richard Chaplow.
This change was greeted with chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ to manager Steve Lomas from some sections of The Den faithful, although it didn’t seem to dampen Martin’s outlook as he returned from injury to make his debut.
“From a personal point of view it was brilliant that I’ve come on,” he said.
“I would have preferred to have got a win, but that’s football, you just have to keep going.
“Because of this injury I’ve lost about three or four weeks, so it is literally like I am starting from scratch whereas the other boys have got a few weeks head-start on me.
“I’ve got back to fitness gradually so now I am just itching to play.”
The Lions were trailing to a James Vaughan header by the time Martin made his appearance from the bench and the winger praised Huddersfield’s resolution.
“It is tough to break down teams in the Championship because they are so organised,” he said.
“We have conceded from a set play and it has cost us.
“It is always going to be hard in the last 20 minutes to break down teams, they just sit in and make it hard for you.”
Millwall have now lost their first three games of the campaign without finding the net and Martin believes the only way to solve the problem is to keep working hard.
He said: “It is one of those where we have had a difficult start, it hasn’t quite fallen for us yet and we haven’t had that little bit of luck.
“But it is down to us to carry on working hard behind the scenes in training and sticking together.
“I was in the same situation last year with Ipswich and the main thing is to keep working hard, putting in the time and getting organised.
“Inevitably the goals will come, but I think the main thing is just to stick together off the field and to make sure we are not feeling too down about things, as there is a long way to go.
“The games are coming thick and fast and that is the nature of the league.
“It isn’t forgiving, so we have to pick ourselves up and go again.”
